About PowWater

PowWater is building the infrastructure behind reliable, affordable water delivery — connecting fill sites, delivery fleets, and customers across our network. As we grow, we're looking for our first in-house Legal Counsel to protect the business, keep it compliant, and give leadership a trusted legal voice in day-to-day decisions.

About The Role

We're looking for a hands-on, generalist Legal Counsel to own PowWater's legal function end-to-end — from the contracts that hold our partnerships together, to the compliance work that keeps us on the right side of the law, to recovering money from customers who aren't paying. This is a build-it-yourself role: you'll set up how legal gets done at PowWater, not inherit a function that already exists.

Location: In-person attendance for all Kenyan candidates at our office.

Responsibilities

Contracts and Commercial Agreements

Draft, review, and negotiate contracts — customer agreements, supplier and vendor contracts, partner and agent agreements, leases, and NDAs.

Compliance, Governance, And Documentation

  • Own regulatory and statutory compliance across the business, including company law filings, data protection, and sector-specific requirements.
  • Prepare and maintain key corporate and legal documentation — licenses, permits, corporate records, and internal policies.

Support corporate governance work, including board documentation and resolutions.

Debt Recovery And Legal Advisory

  • Lead the recovery process for overdue customer accounts: drafting and issuing demand letters, tracking outcomes, and managing escalation to debt collection or court action where needed.
  • Advise leadership on legal risk in commercial, HR, and operational decisions.

Manage relationships with external law firms for litigation or specialized matters outside your day-to-day scope.

Qualifications & Experience

  • LLB from a recognized university and a Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
  • Admitted as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, with a current practicing certificate.
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).
  • 4+ years of post-admission experience as a generalist — ideally including in-house, SME, or startup experience, not litigation-only practice.
  • Strong contract drafting and negotiation skills.
  • Practical, hands-on experience with debt recovery and demand letters.
  • Comfortable working independently as PowWater's sole in-house lawyer, and confident judging when a matter needs to go to outside counsel.

A background in logistics, utilities, or another regulated, consumer-facing business is a strong advantage.
