The Acting Managing Director of Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), Dr. Mohamud Gedi, spearheaded a comprehensive inspection of Manda Airport on Friday, reviewing critical

operational areas and infrastructure projects designed to enhance capacity and service reliability.

Accompanied by KAA’s General Manager, Marketing and Business Development, Mr. Abraham Kipruto, and Regional Airport Manager for the Coast Region, Mr. Abel Gogo, Dr. Gedi closely examined progress on essential initiatives including the Solar-Powered Sea Water Desalination Plant, now 63% complete. He also reviewed the fully installed Solar PV System, currently undergoing performance monitoring during its warranty period. Special attention was paid to the apron and taxiway conditions, ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards vital for aircraft movement.

The team conducted a detailed inspection of the 2,000-metre runway, noting that while 1,400 metres are approved for operations (TORA/TODA), the remaining 600 metres remain displaced, pending further technical evaluation, as stated in the latest Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP) Supplement.

Engaging with Manda Airport staff, Dr. Gedi and his team listened attentively to operational challenges unique to managing an island airport. Dr. Gedi reassured the staff of KAA’s unwavering commitment to improving their working conditions and operational support.

The visit culminated with Dr. Gedi participating in the lively Lamu Cultural Festival’s Beach Soccer Tournament finals, proudly sponsored by KAA. The event celebrated Lamu’s vibrant cultural heritage and was attended by regional dignitaries, including Lamu Governor Hon. Issa Timamy and Kwale Governor Ms. Fatuma Achani. Dr. Gedi’s presence underscored KAA’s dual commitment to aviation excellence and community engagement across the regions it serves.
